Teach Like a Champion
Technique #15
Circulate
“I” Technique

“Breaking the plane shows that you move where you want as a product of your decisions about teaching rather than as a product of student behavior.”

KEY IDEA:  Move around the classroom to engage and hold students accountable.

  • Break the plane. Break the plane (first five feet in front of the board or the teacher desk) within the first 5 minutes.  Break it before a student behavior requires you to.
  • Full access required. You must be able tot get anywhere in your room easily and simply without interrupting your teaching.
  • Engage when you circulate.
  • Move systematically. Move universally and impersonally but unpredictably.
  • Position for power. Remain facing the class as much as possible
